Regeneration

Regeneration is a photographic exploration of menopause as a profound period of transformation — a time when the body changes, familiar perceptions of oneself begin to shift, and a new relationship with identity has to be negotiated.

When I entered perimenopause, I had very little understanding of what was happening to me. The changes in my body were intense and unfamiliar, and without the knowledge or language to make sense of them, I experienced this period with fear and uncertainty. I found myself asking fundamental questions: Who am I now? What is happening to my body? Where am I in this process of becoming someone different?

Looking back, I see this period not as a simple biological transition, but as a difficult process of transformation. Like any profound regeneration, it involved a certain loss of the familiar before something new could begin to emerge.

I began this project from my own experience of entering menopause. At first, I experienced this transition primarily through the physical changes of my body. But as I began photographing myself and speaking with other women, I discovered that menopause reaches far beyond the physical. It can affect the way a woman sees herself, her sense of femininity, her relationship with desire, ageing and visibility, and her understanding of who she is becoming.

VOICES OF WOMEN

As part of Regeneration, I created a sound performance featuring women speaking about menopause in different languages. Their voices bring together personal experiences that are often private, unspoken or overlooked.

The two recordings presented here are part of this performance and extend the photographic work beyond the image, creating a space for women’s voices to be heard.

PART 1

PART 2

There was no clear moment when one state ended and another began. I was moving through a process I did not understand, gradually discovering that transformation can begin long before we know what we are becoming.
